It’s Day 3 and we are only 22 sleeps away from Christmas! Today we are talking about Peru Balsam.Balsam of Peru or Peru balsam is derived from a tree known as Myroxylon balsamum and is found in El Salvador, where it is an endemic species.The oil contains 25 or so different substances, including; cinnamein, cinnamic acid, cinnamyl cinnamate, benzyl benzoate, benzoic acid, and vanillin. It also contains cinnamyl alcohol, cinnamaldehyde, farnesol and nerolidol.This ingredient can be found in caffeinated coffee, flavored tea, wine, beer, gin, liqueurs, apéritifs (e.g. vermouth, bitters) and soft drinks, including cola, as well as being used in fragranced products - especially men's fine fragrance launches.Aromatically, Peru Balsam has a mild but deep, rich aroma that is woody yet sweet with a vanilla and benzoin quality. It also possesses a very subtle hint of cinnamon. Today we are talking about Aldehyde C18 – a synthetic ingredient that smells similar to coconuts.Don’t worry we haven’t gone… coco-nuts (bad jokes are allowed at Christmas) it's just that this is an ingredient that has skipped seasons and is showing up in all manner of festive scented items in the consumer market. Its sweet, creamy, waxy, milky, buttery facets make it smell similar to coconut butter as apposed to gamma-octalactone which is more like fresh coconut. The majority of cinnamon bark oil originates from Sri Lanka where the bark peeling season is dependent on the right level of rains and moisture in the wood bark. The main chemical constituents of Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil and in varying amounts, are Cinnamaldehyde, Cinnamyl Acetate, Eugenol, and Eugenol Acetate.
